I had the pleasure of helping a client out today who could no longer open Outlook out of the blue, a classic case of Microsoft breaking things with an update!!!
The Distress Call
Picture this: a busy professional fires up their Windows 11 machine, Office humming along as usual, until BAM!, Outlook refuses to open. A recent Teams update had sneakily enabled the Teams Meeting add-in, which crashed the app during initialization.
Imagine running a business and not having any access to your emails! Imagine the panic.
The Futile Battle
I started with the usual suspect:
- Repairing Office through Apps & Features did nothing.
- Compacting the data file to shrink its bloat yielded zilch.
- Even firing up ScanPST.exe to scrub PST/OST errors brought no miracle.
The Safe Mode Epiphany
Then came the breakthrough: “Let’s try safe mode.” I guided held Ctrl while clicking Outlook’s icon, confirming the prompt to load without add-ins. Success, Outlook flickered to life, stripped bare. From there, File > Options > Add-ins > COM Add-ins, uncheck “Microsoft Teams Meeting Add-in,” hit OK, and restart normally. Just like that, emails flowed again.
So just more of Microsoft’s great Quality Control and deployment of bugs in every update continues!
