A new issue has emerged in Microsoft Access Version 2412 (Build 18324.20092 Click-to-Run) that affects users relying on the MouseWheel event. This bug could impact scrolling functionality in various applications.
Key Details
Version Affected: Microsoft Access Version 2412 (Build 18324.20092 Click-to-Run)
Issue: The ‘Count’ value in MouseWheel events is reportedly always returning zero (0) instead of -1 (scroll up) and +1 (scroll down). Others are now stating the all Mouse events seems to be impacted beyond just the Count value.
A Fix To The Issue
Update 2025-01-22 – A Proper Fix On The Horizon
The Dev Team has just informed us that the fix to this issue will be part of Version 2501.
Update 2025-01-28
The Good news is that people have stated that the update is out, so update your systems and you should get Version 2501 (Build 18429.20044 Click-to-Run) installed.
The BAD news is several people in the discussions and in the Feedback Portal suggestion comments have already stated the update to 2501 did not fix this issue.
Update 2025-01-30
Version 2501 (Build 18429.20132 Click-to-Run) appears to resolve this issue as confirmed by multiple sources now. So be sure to update your Office installation to this latest build.
Reports of the Issue
The original report of the issue was made by Ross Story dated 2024-12-26, now others have added their voices to his discussion on the matter, and can be found in the following post on Microsoft Answers:

...
MouseWheel Count is always returning 0, so records always move forward (acNext), and never backward (acPrevious).

Workaround to the Problem
There is no fix to the issue as of yet, but Ross indicates that rolling back to a prior build resolved the issue. So try rolling back your Office installation to version 2411 (Build 18227.20162).
If you’re not familiar with that process, see:

A Proper Fix
After waiting 2-3 weeks to see if the Dev Team would resolve the issue, I finally decided to create a Feedback Portal suggestion to add the necessary visibility and to request the Dev Team fix this issue. Feel free to add your support by using the link below to view the suggestion in question and then clicking on the Vote button (up arrow).

Where’s Microsoft In All Of This? – Update 2025-01-14
We’ve (MVPs that is) been informed that Microsoft will indeed fix this bug in an upcoming version. When exactly is unknown. (January’s Patch Tuesday has already passed, so one can hope, perhaps February’s Patch Tuesday depending on the complexity of the underlying root cause would be my best guess??? Then again, they don’t have to adhere to Patch Tuesday for releasing updates if they don’t want to.)
Sorry, nothing official, not on their blog, not on the Fixes page, not in any forums that I’m aware of.
Then again, that entire site appears to be abandoned as none of the bugs found in the past YEAR were ever logged there!
So, if you use the MouseWheel event, be aware there is a new bug so you’re not caught off-guard!

Thank you so much for this. I am not knowledgeable about managing computers at this level but over 25 years I have created a database to hold info for my research. It relies on the mousewheel event to scroll through search results and this week it stopped working.
I found your article, watched the video and followed the instuctions. Problem solved. Bravo.
Will you update your article if you discover that the bug has been fixed?
Thank you again.
Kind regards
I do my best to update my bug articles when new information becomes available. So yes, if/when a proper fix comes out, if I’m aware of it, I will most certainly add the information to this post.
Be sure to up vote the feedback item that I created to demonstrate to Microsoft that this issue impacted you, otherwise this bug may not get the attention you think it deserves.
