Compact and Repair – File Already In Use Bug

Software Bug

Here’s another Microsoft Access bug that’s been around for a while.

This is another hit or miss issues, in that it doesn’t always occur, but it does happen enough that there a good chance you’ve seen before.

All you need to do is perform a Compact and Repair of any database!

Yep, that’s it.

There’s a good chance that at some point you will get a

Could not use ‘PathOfYourDatabase’; file already in use.Microsoft Access

Now this can occur:

  • with any database
  • once or multiple times
  • out of the blue

The issue will also suddenly vanish?!  On the database in the screen recording I got the error 5 times in a row, and then it disappeared. (I only started recording after it happened 4 times).

You can try performing a decompile, or copying your objects to a new blank db, but truthfully I haven’t found that to help. To me there is some underlying timing issue at play here.
