UtterAccess Closed

I’d recently caught wind of some unsettling rumors about UtterAccess shutting down, and I’m saddened to see that, as of yesterday, those rumors have come true as UtterAccess has closed its digital doors for good.

What also surprised me was that none of the Administrators gave the community any prior notice. I suppose that’s just the way things are these days.

I can’t help but suspect that the recent push to direct users over to the Access Talk Discord Server might have been connected to this, perhaps a sign that some insiders knew it was coming.

It’s truly a sad day. One of the best forums out there is now history — along with all the knowledge and downloads it housed.

Now, I need to find a new place to call home online.

Yes, I’m finding the same. It was working a couple of hours ago, so I’m not panicking yet!

Separately, its a shame you don’t have date/times for your posts any more (not for a while now). Any reason why? I did see a thing where it’s considered better for SEO to omit the timestamps, but it’s not very helpful for a site like your’s where some content is date-sensitive, and IMHO the SEO angle is likely a crock anyway!

Jim Dettman posted on Discord regarding this. Bottom line, it’s gone dark and will not be returning.

You had as much notice as I did, Daniel

(though I was only a moderator, not an admin.)

I was informed through a 3rd party that I do not know at all. I tried getting confirmation from someone else, but never did. So I truly wasn’t sure what was going on, or not. It certainly was not my place to start spreading this information.

Regardless, some people did know and it is sad that they didn’t deem it appropriate to tell the UtterAccess community and instead prefer users getting error pages. It’s a disappointing way for it all to come to an end. At least a landing page should be up for a week or two simply stating UA is closed and perhaps offering a couple possible alternatives.

Me too. I’m guessing at the same time as yourself.

I too am disappointed that it happened like this (I was actually in the middle of responding to a thread last night when it stopped working, hence I found your post when trying to find what was going on), but I’m sure there must be reasons why it was done that way, however unsatisfactory I may find it.

A sad day for sure! UA was my favorite Access forum. I could ask a question of experts and always receive several excellent responses from professionals around the world. Now there is a big black hole in Access. I don’t know where to seek help any longer.

I checked my conversations three or four times a day. Some of them had a thousand or more hits. I was hoping that one day I could return to them, and reread your and others’ posts when I learn to better use Access. That has been a challenge because Access has everything, and it gets better with each release.

I’m not in the know, have no real contact with the people controlling UA, but I don’t think we’re going to see anything like that happen.

Also, considering UA was updated a few years back and was a custom system built by Jack’s company, I highly doubt they’d ever publish it publicly.

Moreover, there were numerous issues with the ‘new’ site, we’d be better switching and using an established forum framework instead. Sadly, though, I think UA saw it’s final day.

I’m sorry to see Utteraccess go. I posted there for many years, not so much recently, but I’ll still miss it.

I think many will miss it’s laid back help. It was a truly welcoming forum with some of the world’s best Access developers. I just wish those in control had done a much better job and shared information with the UA community.

Had tried to open it a few weeks ago, figured it was my laptop or something, didnt pay too much attention. Just tried again, and then went on a search to find this. Upsetting, had been a VIP on it for ages, maybe 20 years I think. I have had a bit going on health wise and hadnt been on it for ages, but was always good to get advice on many things. Also had code bits on there that I dont have backed up anywhere else. Doh!

Hope all those on it are doing well, wherever they are!

It took everyone off-guard and has left a gaping hole in the Access Community.

The loss of the code archive is a tremendous loss to the Access Community. Because of the way Jack redid the site and placed the downloads behind authentication, even the WayBack Machine cannot help us out at recovering such information.
