I recently have found my PC to be switching into boost mode, fans blazing and yet, I wasn’t really doing anything that should have caused it to do so.
So, after this occurring a few times, I opened the Task Manager to investigate. What I found was a process called ‘Microsoft Compatibility Telemetry’ in Very high Power usage and and sucking back 50 some percent of my CPU.
Sadly, I didn’t capture a picture at its peak, but here’s the culprit none the less.
I did some digging and found tons of similar reports! So I was in good company.
Some suggested renaming the EXE, which by the way is ‘CompatTelRunner.exe’, but that didn’t seem a prudent thing to do.
Then I found the solution. Apparently this is a task driven by the Task Manager, and as such all we need to do it stop it re-occurrence. In the task manager, mine was set to run every hour. I simply unchecked the repeat box et voilà, problem solved.
So if you wish to eliminate this issue like I did simply:
- Click Start, type Task Scheduler, and then press Enter.
- Click on and expand the Task Scheduler Library and navigate to Microsoft\Windows\Application Experience.
- Right-click on the Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser task
- Select Disable, and then confirm to complete the process.
- Right-click on Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser
- Click Properties from the context menu
- Click on the Triggers tab at the top
- Edit the Enabled one (I had 3 but only one enabled)
- Simply Uncheck the Repeat task every OR change the frequency to something more reasonable
Hope this helps someone else.
Now the question is, will an update reset this change???
