WD Backup has stopped working

I had been using WD Backup for some time now and suddenly, after a Windows update I believe, it stopped working altogether. It would start to load and then report

and crash.

In my Event Viewer, I could see:

Application Error

I looked online and found nothing relevant or helpful.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the software and the problem persisted.

I finally posted a question on the WD community forum and after a couple of months someone (alstrachan) came up with the solution:

  1. Uninstall the program
  2. Delete any remnants of the program in the AppData folder(s) (check both local and roaming)
  3. Reinstall the software and reconfigure everything

Everything hinges on item 2., obviously WD’s uninstaller does not properly clean up after itself leaving behind the source of the problem (corrupted backup plans it would seem from what I can figure out and test).

That said, yes the above can get you back up and running, but I got tired of fighting with this software (I also couldn’t wait months without backups running) and not being able to easily recover files between computers (it require uninstalling/reinstalling the software to be able to do so?!) that I switched over the Duplicati based on fellow MVP’s recommendation.  Check it out, so far it just works and can use any media or cloud storage (you’re not tied to WD)!
