I’ve been smacking my head against my PC (a VM that is) because I couldn’t get it to update beyond Version 2002 (build 12257.22286) no matter what I tried:
- Manually updating via one of the Office Apps
- Forcing the update via command line
- Tried changing the update channel via the command line
- Tried changing the update channel via the MS365 Admin Center
- …
Well, after trying all sorts of things I started Googling and saw I wasn’t alone at facing this issue and eventually found the answer. It is because of the OS, the VM was running Windows 7 and Microsoft stopped updates for MS365 on Windows 7 at Version 2002.
For more details take a look at:

What bothers me with this issue is not that they stopped providing updates to Windows 7 machines (although I’m still not impressed with that), but rather that there is no message generated to clearly indicate the root cause of the issue from any of the update approaches. You’d think Microsoft could display a clear message to indicate
There are no more updates available for MS365 on Windows 7 installations. You must use a more recent OS to be eligible for further updates.
Looks like I’ll be spending a few hours building a new VM.
That correlates to the “Windows and Office Configuration and Support Matrix”.

That chart and other MS announcements indicate subscription based Office365 and perpetual license versions will no longer run on Windows Server OS and Windows365 OS will be cloud based DaaS. Access is desktop based, so what implications does all this have for Access?
The chart also shows ‘No end date’ for MS365 under Windows 11. As for Server, it is covered until 2026, for now at least. Wait for the next release and see what comes.
I’m not guessing and Microsoft never shares.
